William Ancrum (1771-1831) papers, 1802-1831.

Contains William Ancrum's bills and receipts, 1829-1831, documenting sales of books and equipment "to Richland School," and account of Jesse Arthur for sale of farm produce; petition, 1 Dec. 1802, to South Carolina House of Representatives, requesting permission to return his slaves to South Carolina from Georgia, and report of legislative committee, 6 Dec. 1802, granting permission. Bound journal, [4 July] - 5 Aug. [1810?] and 1818-1827, details Ancrum's travels through the foothills and mountains of South Carolina, his meetings with two of the state's Revolutionary War heroes, Robert Anderson, Andrew Pickens, and veteran John Looney, who operated a grist mill. Other topics discussed in the journal include his visits to the upstate villages of Pendleton, Pickensville, and Greenville, and his subsequent travels through the mountains of western North Carolina to the Cumberland Gap, as well as Ancrum's personal accounts, 1818-1827.; bound journal is missing first several pages.
